Frequently asked questions

  • How long does neurofeedback take?
The neurofeedback training protocol is developed based on the individual’s symptoms to be addressed, and adjusted according to the individual’s reactions to the training and how the tracked symptoms are changing. The intake assessment is approximately 2 hours, and then training sessions are about one hour each, typically with an expectation of doing at least 20 sessions. In general, best results are achieved with two sessions per week for at least the first 10 sessions, although it is possible to accommodate higher or lower frequency schedules, which can be discussed. Results are often seen within the first 5 sessions, and neurofeedback training is compatible with virtually any other kind of training, program, and treatment. There are no long-term side effects, temporary side effects are usually corrected within 1-2 sessions, and the cumulative training improvements are long-lasting.
  • What concerns can neurofeedback help with?
Neurofeedback is a very effective non-medication tool to address anxiety, depression, emotional reactivity, inability to focus (ADD), hyperactivity, recovery from and processing of trauma, sleep difficulties, headaches/ migraines, TBIs (traumatic brain injuries), seizures, addictions, eating/GI (gastro-intestinal) disorders, and specific dysfunction within the brain. Neurofeedback has also been used effectively to enhance performance and creative expression for athletes, performers, workers of all kinds, and students. Neurofeedback is appropriate for populations of virtually any age, culture, occupation, condition, or previous history.
  • Where is neurofeedback training done?
Neurofeedback training requires only a computer, monitor, sensors, headset, and sensory stuffed animal (which I provide), and a small, quiet room (which can be different locations as my equipment is portable). Neurofeedback training may be done at my office, or at a location the client chooses that is suitable as described above. There is an additional charge for mobile (out-of-office) sessions.
  • How much do neurofeedback sessions cost?
I work with individuals on a sliding scale depending on their circumstances, including discounts for youth; and sessions can be purchased per session, but I offer packages to lower the cost of each session if individuals commit to 10 or 20 sessions. Please note that I do not bill any insurance companies, so payment is due from the client at the time of service. Clients may pay by cash, check, credit/debit card, from Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), or via the cash apps Zelle or Venmo.
  • Can I participate in neurofeedback if I am taking medications currently?
Yes. If you are currently taking medication(s), it is important to be stabilized on all of them for at least 2 weeks before starting neurofeedback sessions. As the brain is trained and begins to regulate and to start taking over the functions that medications were prescribed for, it is very common that medications need to be reduced, and in some cases, they may be eliminated altogether. It is therefore very important that there be frequent and ongoing communication between the client, medication prescriber, and the neurofeedback practitioner throughout the neurofeedback training.
